Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
03-sep-2007
If you ever read a Sherlock Holmes book or seen a movie, you’ll most likely love this investigation which will lead the most famous detective of all time to the edge of the irrational. Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened will be released on Sept 4 and promises an engaging story, logic puzzles and nice visuals.
Ever liked mysteries? If so, Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is THE game for you! The game is not easy at all. Holmes and Dr. Watson have to be very careful during the game to stop cultists from setting off Cthulhu’s alarm clock. You are able to figure out all the challenges coming your way IF you play as Holmes. That means, you need to examine very closely your surroundings, keeping an eye on everything: scraps of cloth, footprints, fibers, any other clue –very unpredictable, may I add – which will unravel the mystery.

Question: is the game tedious? Not if you like the genre. If you are attentive and you scan the backdrops with Holmes’ or Watson’s eyes, you’ll spot the clues very fast. Desks and shelves are KEY places to look for clues and if you need a closer look, use Holmes’ magnifying glass. There is a nice sense of consistency and logic to the game and you will be on the right track IF you like to search in any possible place. Otherwise, if you are a fan of cars’ games or shooters, you’ll most likely get bored in less than 5 minutes.

There are many puzzles to be resolved during the game, like finding the combinations to door locks, some tough ciphers, drawing a bloody pentagram, to name just a few. Holmes also has to take the evidence back to the labs and examine them.

The game is depicted in first person shooter style. You look through the eyes of Holmes of Watson while the movement is in full 3D environments.

Unfortunately you can’t skip the cutscenes and ..Holmes is VERY talkative during some of them, so I be there will be times when you want to hit the ESC button just to make him shut up.

Although maybe not my kind of game, Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is a must-play game if you want to take a break from cars, shooters, strategy and remember Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character, who was the leading detective in four novels and fifty-six short stories.
