Hardlinks or physical world hyperlinking
12-jul-2007
A new technology, available in US, Japan and Finland (for now), makes it possible to make physical world hyperlinks. It’s called hardlinking and it’s already available. Published with the acceptance of John Bottorff from OracleJane LLC.
Imagine this: It’s 8 AM and you are in class, waiting for the professor. It’s Computer Architecture course today and of course, you’d rather be in bad sleeping…we know! But, picture this! Instead of the annoying lecture about what computers are made of…your professor will tell you to use your cell phone or PDA and type CPU…and …poof!... you are faced with all the information you need. Sci-fi technology? Not at all!

What is so special about hardlinking? Being able to link the real world to the digital one, means that, at any time, when a student takes the photo of a code placed on an object or types the series of characters associated with it, the PDA or cell phone will give all the information about the object. It’s a lot easier than taking endless notes, not being attentive at what the professor says and, not being able to visualize what the lecture is about.

Another interesting use is hardlinking your business with the help of your business card, or better said by giving your customers are business card with a "special number" on it.

Now you can use a hardlink to make a physical connection between your name, email or phone number and your business using a cell phone. Sounds strange? Let’s explain it step by step.

First thing to do is go to http://www.buildharlink.com and under the cell phone on the right of the page, click on Build your own link…this will guide you through a process of entering the hardlink – decide on a name, cell phone number, email (can you get even more creative?) – and creating the content which will be available for your business customers. When you are done, make sure to test your own creation on your cell phone!

Hardlink

In other words, next time you’ll “share” business cards, tell your business customer to go on hardlink.mobi using their cell phone and then enter your name or cell phone number by placing two forward slashes in front of the link, in order to indicate the cell phone that they are accessing a link.

Best part? Not only do your business partners be able to read everything about you and you business directly from their cell phones, but the hardlinks can’t be discovered by robots so there is no way you’ll get any spam!
